This is something that I wish all doctors knew. Of course, on the surface, there would be reason for concern in prescribing amphetamines to someone who has a predisposition towards or an active addiction, but more and more research has demonstrated that treating the underlying ADHD (which the user is usually just self-medicating) greatly reduces the likelihood of future substance use. In other studies, researchers found that when children are not treated for ADHD, the rates of substance abuse increase by up to 700%. This is not a coincidence or a trick of statistics.
